We have some interesting people visiting to give talks on Communes at the Maryborough and Hervey bay Library..

Dr William (Bill) Metcalf, this year’s winner of the John Douglas Kerr Medal of Distinction in Research and Writing Australian History, will soon speak at Fraser Coast Libraries about communes in Queensland.

Fraser Coast people will have a unique opportunity to listen to Dr Metcalf talk about communes when he speaks at libraries in Hervey Bay and Maryborough next month.

Dr Metcalf was honoured in June for his research career spanning four decades when the Royal Historical Society of Queensland and the Professional Historians Association (Qld) awarded him the prestigious John Douglas Kerr Medal of Distinction.

Dr Metcalf has advanced the study of Queensland and Australian history most notably through his investigation of utopian communalism in Australia.

His publishing includes The Gayndah Communes, published in 1998 and found in the Fraser Coast Libraries Local History Collection. The book celebrates its 20th anniversary this year.

In addition, Dr Metcalf has authored a bibliography of journal articles and essays, and continues to explore this subject in his ongoing project, The Encyclopedia of Australian Utopian Communalism.

This year, Friends Farm: Australia’s First Quaker Commune has been published, relating to communes on the area now called Sunshine Coast.
