What a busy week.

We attended the Volunteers expo on Saturday at the Town Hall and a huge thank you to the volunteers that helped out.. without you we couldn’t have done it. There were a great crowd and we met some new people are excited to get our new volunteers started.

We are still looking for more so if you have some free time drop by and say hi to see us.

Maryborough Walk of Achievers – one of our members GG Grandfather was honoured at the Walk of Achievers luncheon on Sunday. It was an amazing day and to meet some of the recipients that attended was an honour for any of the guests. We have had the greatest of opportunties over the years and the walk showcases how far some of our locals have travelled and achieved.

If you have a couple of hours free why not go down grab a brochure and read all the names in the footpaths in the Wharf St Precinct and check out our famous people

A copy of the Walk of Achievers is available online here

Asking for help

We are a society manned by volunteers and are surrounded by both digital and hard copy resources and our aim is to assist you in any way we can but we do ask a couple of things.

Like any Family History Society we have lots of info on hand and sometimes we find it difficult when doing research to give the client the exact info they are looking for .. why you ask??

Well if there are 51 Murphys buried in our cemetery and your looking for John Murphy then it can be really difficult to provide the right one if you don’t give us any extra info, and there sometimes is that amazing event when 2 of them died in the same month and year.

Will we just give you the best sounding one or the first one off the list …. NO... why – because we are pedantic over details.

Details, details details why let details get in the way of a good story. We ask that when you go to any Society for help remember they do not know your family or its story so they are basically looking for strangers in a graveyard.

So ensure you give the Society as much info as you have.. so if you  have done any research send them a copy of it or at least a family group sheet. That way they can link in the missing pieces and any marriages etc or extra family details that may reveal the missing clues.

DON’T keep it to yourself ..we will find a thread, then try and verify that thread, then try and link another thread to the first till we know we have a solid, verifiable link to give you. Also be very clear on what your looking for if your not interested in connecting families that sometimes have vital information. Let us know, as sometimes you have to go sideways to go down or up.

We are not mind readers, or psychic’s and are only able to work off what you give us.

We have updated our resource page to clarify when we ask you for a donation it is because we have spent time and money looking for you and to continue providing this service we need to be able to buy new books, purchase subscriptions etc..

Did you know if you drop into our rooms you can use all our subscriptions so for the annual fee of joining as a member you get the use of things like full Ancestry, Find My Past, Society of Genealogists website etc as part of your subscription.

Please help us help you by sending us as much info as you can when your asking us or anybody for help.. saves time, energy and coffee if we have a good starting point.

Happy Searching

So we have heaps going on at the moment and will catch up soon for the latest updates.

Busy, busy, busy

We hope you all had a lovely break over Easter, we are back on deck and flat out and its a huge week for us. We have a committee meeting this week and we are hoping to discuss some exciting things that could change the way we do things.

Some of the things we are looking at is things like digital downloads of our books. We know how easy it is to download and read something on your computer and with such busy lives and the chance to get that tiny missing link of info. this could make a huge difference to your research.

We have been really busy with our Family Research Program and over the last month have listed more than 5,00 headstones matched to the person if they are buried in the Wide Bay area,

We have added thousands of extracts from the newspapers, new information on houses around the area.

Then one of our amazing researchers Marlene has been doing a huge job of researching the history of Butchers in the area and it has been a massive project but coming together in an awesome way.

In our paper records we had files and files of Service Booklets from funerals and we have been adding them to the people profiles we are building. It is amazing what information can be found in those booklets. If you have any of these in your collections and would like to scan and send us a copy we would appreciate being able to add it to our records.

Our Family Tree is still growing at such a pace.. we have added more than 2,000 names in the last couple of weeks alone and are hoping to be able to release that online for your use before Christmas.. but it takes time to enter all the names so keep checking in with us to see our progress.

Our Family Tree is a compilation of family trees we have had donated to us and we are putting them all together in one place, the sources of information have come from near and far, and it is basically user submitted and we will be once we have the base names in there asking if you would like to add you information too..

So we have heaps going on at the moment and will catch up soon for the latest updates.
